A man is in custody after he fatally shot one woman and held another hostage early Monday morning in northwest Killeen, police said.

Killeen police, including the SWAT team, were called to an apartment building in the 900 block of Mimosa Street at 5:30 a.m., after a woman told police she witnessed a shooting and was subsequently taken hostage.

The witness told police she was in the apartment with the man, described by police as a 41-year-old black male, when the victim, a 43-year-old woman, knocked on the door and asked to speak with him.

The witness said the man and the victim exchanged words in the doorway before he shot her. The male then threatened the witness and took her hostage. She was able to escape and notified police, according to a statement from the Killeen Police Department.

After Killeen police and SWAT officers surrounded the apartment building, the shooter surrendered at 7:24 a.m., police said.

The victim was pronounced dead at 8:04 a.m. by Justice of the Peace Bill Cooke, who ordered an autopsy.

The name of the victim was withheld until her next of kin were notified, police said.

Police also withheld the name of the alleged shooter, until the case is reviewed by the Bell County District Attorney’s Office and formal charges are filed.

“The Criminal Investigations Division continues to investigate this homicide, and information will be released as it becomes available,” according to a statement from KPD.

Monday’s homicide wasn’t the first in northwest Killeen this year. In July, 38-year-old Maurice Carter was found shot to death inside the Highlander Apartment complex, less than two miles from where Monday’s standoff occurred.

According to information from the RAIDS Online crime mapping system, 12 homicides were reported within a three-mile radius of the Mimosa Street address between January 2012 and Monday.

The same online database also shows that 25 homicides occurred within the same three-mile radius over the last five years.
