BELTON — A Bell County grand jury indicted a Killeen man on a manslaughter charge Wednesday.

Douglas Maximus Heffernan, 23, is accused of accidentally killing his roommate while cleaning a loaded revolver. He was originally charged with aggravated assault with a deadly weapon in connection with the shooting of 20-year-old Jack Tennyson.

Heffernan was cleaning his Taurus revolver at his home in the 3500 block of Pebble Drive in Killeen on Jan. 16 when he pulled the trigger, an arrest affidavit stated. The shot struck Tennyson in the face.

Emergency personnel airlifted him to Scott & White Hospital. He remained in the hospital for three days before his family decided to remove him from life support. Tennyson then died.

Heffernan told police he pulled the trigger while cleaning his revolver.

Though the cylinder of the weapon was closed, an investigator said loaded bullets were clearly visible, the affidavit stated.

Heffernan posted $100,000 bond Feb. 4.
