MOODY — Police arrested a Moody woman Saturday after it was discovered she allegedly left her children with a convicted sex offender and drug user, Moody Police Chief Chris Veselka said.

Melissa Rodriguez-Brumfield, 38, remained in McLennan County Jail on Monday, charged with two second-degree felony offenses of abandoning and endangering her two children.

Her bonds total $300,000, Veselka said.

Rodriguez-Brumfield reportedly left her children, ages 8 and 12, with George Hammond, 56, a convicted moderate risk sex offender, for a little more than a week, Veselka said Monday.

Hammond was convicted in 1986 of the sexual assault of a 34-year-old woman, according to the Department of Public Safety sex offender registry. Veselka said Hammond is “in and out of trouble, uses drugs and has been involved in assaults.”

Officers worked to piece together what happened with the children’s grandparents, who live in McGregor. Apparently Rodriguez-Brumfield was staying with her boyfriend and the children were “in the way.” She allegedly took them to Hammond’s house and told him to “keep them.”

The children, very upset, didn’t know where their mother was and called the grandparents who, in turn, called Moody police. Officers eventually found Rodriguez-Brumfield.

The case was filed with Child Protective Services and the children are staying with their grandparents until CPS finishes its investigation, Veselka said.

Saturday wasn’t the first time the woman had a run-in with police, Veselka said. Rodriguez-Brumfield was arrested Dec. 16 on two charges of animal cruelty.

A neighbor called police with concerns about animals at her home. A Moody officer found one dog dead and tied to a tree. There was no food or water and it appeared the animal starved to death. The other dog was in a very small cage and was almost dead, Veselka said.
