BELTON — A Bell County grand jury Wednesday indicted a suspect in an October murder in Killeen on additional charges.

Killeen resident Cliffton Sivad Montague, 27, also faces a charge of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon in connection with an incident the day before he allegedly shot a man to death on Hereford Lane.

Several witnesses heard Montague shoot Latternace Deshaun Newsome on Oct. 11 inside an apartment in the 3300 block of Hereford Lane. Two neighbors spoke with Montague shortly after the shooting, and he told them he had just shot a man, according to court documents.

The day before, Montague allegedly threatened a woman with a handgun.

The incident took place at a home in the 4000 block of Terri Linn in Killeen about 2:30 a.m. Oct. 10, District Attorney Henry Garza said.

The woman contacted police later that day. She told investigators she was arguing with her sister when Montague pulled out a silver handgun, loaded it and pointed it at the woman, an arrest affidavit stated.

Police arrested Montague Oct. 17 at a local motel where he had been hiding after the shooting.

Since his arrest, Montague also was charged with assault on a public servant for allegedly punching a Bell County Jail guard in the face.

In total, Montague was charged with seven crimes in Bell County since November 2010. He pleaded guilty to unlawful carry of a weapon, possession of marijuana, less than 2 ounces, and possession of a controlled substance, less than 1 gram.

Court records show Montague was convicted of felony damage to property and robbery while he lived in Virginia. He remains in Bell County Jail with bail set at $1.2 million.
