Area police and fire departments will tour scores of block parties this evening for the 29th annual National Night Out celebration.

From 6 to 9 p.m., officers and firefighters will visit with the residents across the Killeen area to spur communication between residents and law enforcement.

In total, 49 parties have been registered in Killeen, Harker Heights and Copperas Cove, with 34 in Killeen alone.

“National Night Out sends a message to criminals that we will stand up and fight back against crime,” said Sgt. Kevin Keller, a spokesperson for the Copperas Cove Police Department. “It shows a sense of unity within a neighborhood and bonding means power.”

Officers will escort McGruff the Crime Fighting Dog and Sparky from party to party. The sheer number of parties led to Killeen’s officers to divide up into three groups in order to make it to every party. Each group will have a volunteer dressed as McGruff the Crime Dog, Killeen police Crime Prevention Coordinator Tammy Moseley said.

Keller said the Copperas Cove police department would continue to register parties until this afternoon.

“This is a great opportunity to get outdoors and enjoy the awesome weather,” he said. “Take this opportunity to meet new neighbors, talk with old friends, and make memories with the family.”
