For the first time in at least five years, no people were killed in criminal homicides during January in Killeen.

The last criminal homicide in the city happened Dec. 17, when Bernard Trumarde Winston-Haynes, 34, and Courtney Jamal Nelson, 34, shot and killed each other outside the Lone Star Inn and Suites at 409 S. Second St. just before 2:30 a.m.

The city hasn’t been rid of violent behavior in January. There have been at least six calls or arrests made on charges of deadly conduct or discharging a firearm within city limits since Jan. 1 this year, according to

Tuesday morning, police responded to a shots-fired call in the 1100 block of North 8th Street.

On Saturday, the 1700 block of Sunset Drive in northeast Killeen was blocked off after someone put at least three bullet holes in a home’s metal garage door.

On Jan. 15, a man was shot on the 700 block of McArthur Drive in Killeen at 1:42 a.m. and survived. A 13-year-old was shot in a home in the 1300 block of Fox Creek on Jan. 3. He suffered minor injuries and was released from the hospital shortly after.

Later that day, a man was shot outside a convenience store in north Killeen, but neglected to cooperate with police in the investigation after he was released from the hospital, police said.

In the month of December, police responded to 10 calls related to deadly conduct or the unlawful discharge of a firearm. There was also one homicide.

There is not a homicide every single month. There were no homicides being investigated by police in June 2017 either.

There have been two criminal homicides in nearby Temple this year. Both have stemmed from home invasions.


In January 2017, there were two homicides in Killeen.

In 2017, Eric Dieter Hill, 34, was shot dead Jan. 11 and found in the driveway of a home on Taree Loop. Less than a week later, on Jan. 16, Harry “Butch” Polite was shot and killed on Brownsville Drive at 6:18 p.m. No arrests were made in either case.

In January 2016, 38-year-old Takesha Lareva was found dead in her home in the 1600 block of Carrollton Avenue after an invasion, police said.

On Jan. 17, 2015, Christina Yvette McDaniel, 31, of Killeen, was shot to death at a home in the 4000 block of Stallion Drive. Her shooter, 39-year-old Franklin Rafael Aguilar, shot McDaniel after an argument, then fled the scene of the crime. Aguilar was found two days later sitting in his vehicle at McDonald’s in Del Rio, dead of a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

On Jan. 5, 2014, Terry Lee Moon Jr., 32, was shot and killed at a home in the 2300 block of Zephyr Road. Sean William Schuman, 32, was found dead in his apartment in the 100 block of Anderson Drive 10 days later.
