Officer, suspect injured in Killeen chase

A routine traffic stop Saturday morning ended with a Killeen police officer and a suspect injured.

An officer attempted to stop a silver Nissan the area of Elms Road and Fort Hood Street for a traffic violation at 5:09 a.m. Saturday, according to a Killeen Police Department news release. The driver fled from the officer, who pursued the vehicle through several neighborhoods west of the area.

The suspect came to a stop at the dead end of Palmtree and Coral Bay lanes. When the officer exited his vehicle; the suspect fled again, striking the officer with the vehicle, the release stated. The officer fired his weapon as the vehicle fled west on Coral Bay. When the vehicle stopped, the suspect got out and fled on foot.

The suspect was located by a dog with the K-9 unit hiding behind an air conditioner in the 3600 block of Coral Bay at 6:11 a.m., police reported.

The suspect was transported to Carl R. Darnall Army Medical Center at Fort Hood with a gunshot wound. He was airlifted to Scott & White Hospital and was in stable condition Saturday afternoon. His name was withheld by police, pending charges.

The injured officer, whose name was withheld, was treated at Scott & White Hospital and released. The officer involved in the shooting was placed on administrative leave, per protocol, police said.
