Sgt. Brett Marvin Wessel

Fort Hood officials today released more details about a fatal Sunday morning shooting on post.

On Sunday, authorities apprehended Sgt. Brett Marvin Wessel, 26, a West Fort Hood resident, in connection with the shooting death of retired Army Sgt. Ryan F. Dickinson, said Christopher P. Grey, public affairs spokesman for the U.S. Army's Criminal Investigation Command.

Wessel, a soldier with 1st Brigade Special Troops Battalion, 1st Brigade Combat Team, 1st Cavalry Division, is being held in Bell County Jail without bail.

Grey said an autopsy is being conducted on Dickinson.

While the Bell County Jail Inmate log stated Wessel was booked for suspected murder, Fort Hood spokesman Tyler Broadway said no charges have been filed and U.S. Army Criminal Investigation Command continues to investigate the incident.

The shooting happened after an altercation at a residence on West Fort Hood, Broadway said. Neither Wessel nor Dickinson lived at the residence.
