Police arrested a 27-year-old Virginia man they believe shot and killed a 48-year-old Killeen woman Saturday night.
The shooting occurred inside an apartment in the 500 block of Esther Circle, a few blocks from Killeen High School.
Police charged Harry Alvin Parsons with murder in connection with the death of Veronica Denise Avant. Authorities apprehended Parsons on Sunday night in Round Rock. He had not been transported to Bell County as of press time.
According to an arrest affidavit, a domestic disturbance began when one of Avant’s sons arrived at the apartment with a woman, and his ex-girlfriend was there.
A neighbor said the Avant brothers managed to calm the ex-girlfriend somewhat and led her to her car. The woman left the property and things appeared to calm down, said the neighbor, who gave her name as Keisha, but did not wish to be fully identified.
Several members of the family of the shooting victim then arrived at the home.
After a 20-minute gap, the ex-girlfriend returned followed by another car containing two females and a man later identified as the shooter, the affidavit stated.
Parsons got out of the vehicle and began shooting at one of the victim’s sons. He ran into the apartment. Parsons followed and forced his way into the home while still firing a handgun, the affidavit stated.
Parsons and the man struggled over the handgun in the living room of the apartment, during which at least two gunshots were fired, the neighbor said.
Parsons fled with a handgun before any of the family members realized Avant had been shot in the stomach.
Emergency personnel took her to Carl R. Darnall Army Medical Center, where Avant died while in surgery.
Police later learned that another ex-boyfriend of the woman involved in the original disturbance had been in town from Virginia. That man, Parsons, matched the physical description of the suspect provided by witnesses.
Avant’s son identified Parsons as the shooter in a photo lineup. Justice of the Peace Bill Cooke has suggested Parsons’ bond be set at $1 million.
Avant’s death marks the second homicide of the year in Killeen.
