A Fort Hood soldier died in a car crash near Briggs and Wolfridge Road in south Bell County after leading police on a chase.

The chase started in Coryell County and the individual was believed to be headed to Copperas Cove, said Harpin Myers, a Texas Department of Public Safety spokesman.

DPS troopers clocked the car driven by the man at speeds greater than 90 miles per hour, Myers said.

The vehicle chase led police onto Texas Highway 195, and turned on to Briggs Road.

During the chase, the driver missed a curve in the road and headed straight into a tree, Myers said. The crash was reported at about midnight.

Bell County Justice of the Peace Garland Potvin pronounced the man dead at the scene.

DPS said it did not have a name of the man as of 11 a.m.
