Killeen police arrested a 28-year-old man they said attempted to escape custody.

Police charged Lavido Montrey Singletary with escape following an encounter with him as police investigated an unrelated call.

While police were investigating the call in the 1200 block of Industrial Boulevard at about 11:15 p.m. Sunday, an officer saw a vehicle parked crookedly in parking spots.

As the officer approached, he smelled the odor of burnt marijuana, according to an arrest affidavit.

The officer got Singletary’s attention to ask about the 911 call. When Singletary opened the car’s window, the smell of marijuana grew stronger, the affidavit stated.

Police searched the car and found more than 4 ounces of suspected marijuana, the affidavit stated.

Police then detained and handcuffed Singletary. As they continued to search the vehicle, Singletary ran from officers. He was captured after a short pursuit, the affidavit stated.

Justice of the Peace Bill Cooke arraigned Singletary on Tuesday, setting his bail at $50,000. He remained in Bell County Jail on Tuesday evening.
