The Killeen High School student who authorities said was caught with a gun on campus last week was identified Monday as 17-year-old Jonathon Allen Hampton.
Hampton, of Killeen, was arrested Thursday after a student reported seeing him pick up a gray backpack, reach into it and place his hand around the handle of a gun, according to an arrest affidavit.
When Killeen Independent School District police initially searched Hampton’s backpack, all they found were video games. Hampton told them the gun was in another backpack in his locker.
When police searched the second backpack, they recovered a .22-caliber pistol, a magazine for the weapon, .22-caliber bullets and a ski mask, the affidavit stated.
A letter was sent home to KHS parents on the day of the incident.
The letter characterized the incident as an “unusual occurrence.”
It also stated the matter was being processed by the Bell County district attorney’s office.
Hampton was arraigned Monday by Justice of the Peace Bill Cooke on a third-degree felony charge of possessing a prohibited weapon.
Hampton is in Bell County Jail. His bond was set at $100,000.
