A Killeen man is facing felony charges after police said he was in possession of hundreds of dollars in fake currency.

John Paul Steele Jr., 32, was arraigned Thursday on a felony charge of forgery by Justice of the Peace Garland Potvin. Potvin set Steele’s bond at $20,000.

According to an arrest affidavit, two employee’s found a wallet containing $360 in counterfeit bills Tuesday in the parking lot of the First National Bank Texas on North 38th Street. The bills included eight counterfeit $20 bills, and two counterfeit $100 bills. The employees also found a driver’s license and Social Security card that identified Steele as the owner of the wallet. As the employees waited for the police to arrive, they witnessed Steele wandering around the parking lot and looking on the ground “as if he had lost something.” Steele was then seen getting into a U-Haul truck and leaving.

Steele later admitted to police he lost the wallet and that he knew the money was fake, the affidavit stated.

As of Thursday afternoon, Steele was in custody in Bell County Jail.

The following individuals also were arraigned on unrelated charges Thursday:

  • Matthew Lewis Hanks, 27, on a charge of assault on a family or household member by strangulation. Hanks’ bail was set at $100,000.
  • Cody Wayne Espinosa, 35, on a charge of possession of cocaine, more than 1 gram, but less than 4 grams. Espinosa’s bail was set at $25,000.
