Police from Killeen and Harker Heights will be patrolling local railroad crossings today as part of an effort to raise awareness for railroad safety.

Officers from both departments met with representatives from the BNSF Railroad for the operation, which began around 8 a.m. and is expected to last until noon.

The crossings patrolled by police range from Fort Hood Street in Killeen to Farm-to-Market Road 3219.

The last time local police participated in a similar operation was in 2009, when they handed out 62 citations.
