A local American Red Cross volunteer was arraigned Wednesday after being arrested and charged with stealing more that $117,000 from the organization by making false disaster claims.

David Allen Gilg III, 25, was arrested by Killeen police on Tuesday after an investigation revealed he had stolen the funds by submitting several fictitious claims to the local Red Cross, according to a KPD arrest affidavit.

According to the affidavit, an employee at the Killeen Red Cross discovered that Gilg, then a volunteer, was making false claims when the address he used on a submitted claim turned out to be false.

Several more fake claims made by Gilg were later found. Gilg admitted to the scheme and initially stated that he had stolen about $100,000, but documentation later revealed it was actually $117,465

Glig was charged with theft over $100,000, but under $200,000, a felony. He was arraigned Wednesday by Justice of the Peace Bill Cook, who set his bail at $120,000.
