Salado man arrested after hourlong car chase

Updated

SALADO — A Salado man suspected of leading police officers on an hourlong vehicle chase on Tuesday remains in Bell County Jail awaiting arraignment.

The Bell County Sheriff’s Department is holding Jeffery Luther Care, 20, pending a formal charge of evading arrest with a motor vehicle and possibly a charge of assault on a public servant.

His arraignment should take place this morning, said Lt. Donnie Adams, with the department.

At about 9:30 p.m. Tuesday, Salado police attempted to pull Care over for a traffic violation, when he sped way, Adams said.

The Salado officer gave pursuit down Farm-to-Market 2484, north on FM 1670, east on U.S. Highway 190, south on Interstate Highway 35, and then returned to FM 2484, Adams said.

The vehicle ran out of gas near Eagle Nest Road south of Harker Heights and Killeen.

As the Salado officer attempted to arrest Care, he allegedly wrestled with the police officer.

During the altercation, the officer hurt his back and was transported to Scott & White Hospital in Temple.

He was released Wednesday morning.
