The Copperas Cove man accused of repeatedly abusing a young child was identified as an active-duty soldier Tuesday afternoon.

Fort Hood officials confirmed that the man arrested Monday by Copperas Cove police, William Lester Shawl III, is a staff sergeant with 1st Brigade Combat Team, 1st Cavalry Division.

Cove police said their investigation revealed that 28-year-old Shawl sexually abused a young female child under the age of 14 multiple times over the span of a year.

Shawl is currently in custody in Coryell County Jail, according to jail records. His bail is set at $50,000.
