COPPERAS COVE — Few details are known about the shooting that left one man dead Wednesday morning outside the Wal-Mart off East U.S. Highway 190.
Police arrived on the scene shortly after 4 a.m. after receiving reports of gunshots heard in the vicinity.
The police department confirmed one man was found dead at the scene, though his name and description were being withheld as the investigation continues.
The victim was transported to Metroplex Hospital in Killeen, but it is unclear whether he died at the crime scene or while in transit to the hospital.
Multiple witnesses were questioned following the shooting, as police work to piece together the circumstances surrounding the incident.
“Detectives are still working the case and do not want to release anything that would jeopardize the investigation,” police spokesman Sgt. Martin Ruiz said late Wednesday afternoon.
“They have been speaking to witnesses all day.”
Management from the Copperas Cove Wal-Mart was unable to comment on the incident, but Betsy Harden, a Wal-Mart spokeswoman, said the store is “working closely with police as they investigate.”
It has been about a year since the last homicide occurred in Cove.
The last reported case was a stabbing in a domestic violence incident in October 2014.
