BELTON — The suspect in the October shooting death of a man in Killeen is now facing another charge after a grand jury indicted him for allegedly punching a deputy at the county jail.

Cliffton Sivad Montague, 27, already faced multiple felony charges, including murder, when the Bell County grand jury indicted him Wednesday on a charge of assault on a public servant.

On his 27th birthday, on Oct. 11, Montague shot and killed 24-year-old Latternace Deshaun Newsome inside an apartment in the 3300 block of Hereford Lane. The day before, Montague threatened two women with a handgun, arrest affidavits stated.

Police apprehended Montague at a local motel Oct. 17. Several witnesses heard Montague arguing with Newsome before the shooting, and two women told police he spoke of shooting a man just minutes after they heard several gunshots, an arrest affidavit stated.

On Nov. 27, Montague allegedly punched a Bell County Jail guard in the face.

First Assistant District Attorney Murff Bledsoe said guards had been escorting some prisoners from the C Unit of the jail to an outdoor recreation area when Montague and others became irate that some inmates were not taken outside for disciplinary measures.

As a deputy led Montague to the threshold of the door to the recreational area, Montague turned around and punched a guard in the face, an affidavit stated.

Montague remains in Bell County Jail on $1.2 million bond and a motion to revoke his probation.

Since 2010, Montague has been convicted of five crimes in Bell County, including felony drug possession, marijuana possession and unlawful possession of a firearm in Bell County.

He also spent time in prison in Norfolk, Va., on a 2005 conviction for robbery, his indictment stated.
