Following reports of a shooting Tuesday morning at the intersection of Poage Avenue and W.S. Young Drive in Killeen, nearby Peebles Elementary School was placed on lockdown for more than half an hour, according to a Killeen Independent School District spokesman.

KISD spokesman Todd Martin said the lockdown was initiated at 8:52 a.m. Tuesday and lifted at 9:32 a.m. at the recommendation of the Killeen Police Department.

When reached Tuesday afternoon, KPD spokeswoman Carroll Smith did confirm shots had been reported at the intersection, but did not have any other information on the incident. Smith also could not confirm any details surrounding the lockdown.

"There were reports of shots fired but they (police) weren't able to find anything," Smith said.

According to Martin, the incident did not involve activity that took place on the school grounds at 1800 North W.S. Young.

Martin said an automated phone call about the lockdown was being sent out to parents of Peebles students starting after 5 p.m. Tuesday.

"The idea was to do it when parents were home from work," Martin said when asked about the time frame for the call.

Some parents reported they were angry they first learned of the lockdown after school and from their children instead of KISD officials.

"I don't care how long it was; it's the point the school went on lockdown, period," said Latisha Aguilar, who has three students attending Peebles.

"If you felt it necessary to lock my children in the classroom, it should be necessary to contact parents."
