Police identified a man found shot to death in a north Killeen apartment as 33-year-old Maurice Devon Carter.
Carter was found shot multiple times inside an upstairs apartment at the Highlander Apartments complex in the 300 block of North 22nd Street on Thursday morning.
Police are investigating his death as a homicide, the city’s third in 2013.
Police received a call to the apartment complex Wednesday after a resident heard gunshots. Officers were unable to locate any evidence of a shooting and left.
At 9:30 a.m. Thursday, a female knocked on the door to Carter’s apartment but received no answer. A male arrived at the location looking for Carter as well and heard that there had been gunshots in the area the previous night. The man began rapping loudly on the apartment door and eventually forced his way into the apartment, police said.
He discovered Carter leaning against a wall and the front door suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. Blood trails at the scene showed he had moved from the kitchen, across a cluttered floor and to the wall, where he died.
Justice of the Peace Bill Cooke pronounced Carter dead at 10:54 a.m. Thursday.
However, some of Carter’s friends believe he was shot the night before.
They said the likely shooter was a white man who lives in the same apartment complex. The man has not been seen since the shooting allegedly took place Wednesday night, however, police have not provided any suspect descriptions.
Police are asking anyone with information about Carter’s death to call Crime Stoppers at (254) 526-8477, go to www.bellcountycrimestoppers.com or text BELLCO and the tip to 274637.
