A Fort Hood soldier will be sentenced in March after pleading guilty to federal explosives charges earlier.

U.S. Judge Walter S. Smith set the sentencing hearing for Spc. Jason Alan Garthwaite Sr., of Copperas Cove, for March 18, according to court documents.

Garthwaite was arrested in September after investigators found a bag containing pipe bombs, as well as bomb-making materials at his residence.

According to court documents filed by the U.S. Attorney’s office, Garthwaite’s wife said his interest in “doomsday preparation” began about two months before his arrest.

Garthwaite’s wife said he also “expressed anti-government and conspiracy theories.”

Garthwaite was charged with possession of an unregistered destructive device, by federal prosecutors, a crime that could carry a prison sentence of up to 10 years.

His trial was initially scheduled for Feb. 3, but court records show that he pleaded guilty to the charge Jan. 23.

According to court records, Garthwaite will remain in custody until his sentencing hearing, which will take place in a federal court in Waco.
