The suspect involved in a car chase that injured a Killeen police officer was charged with evading arrest in a motor vehicle.

Charles Raul Torres, 19, had his bail set at $100,000 for the charge Friday.

Police believe Torres was driving a stolen Hyundai on Wednesday, which led to a high-speed chase on neighborhood streets in north Killeen.

According to an arrest affidavit, an officer spotted a Hyundai Avega on North W.S. Young Drive that had been reported stolen. An officer attempted to pull the car over, but the driver, a man later identified as Torres, sped off at a high rate of speed.

The car struck a curb, popping both driver’s side tires; however, Torres continued to evade police, the affidavit stated. The tires continued to deteriorate as Torres drove the car on Duncan Avenue.

A police officer was preparing to lay down a spike strip when Torres ran the Hyundai into the officer’s parked vehicle.

It caused a head injury to the officer, who was later taken to Scott & White Hospital in Temple. The officer was discharged Thursday, police spokeswoman Carroll Smith said.

The car ran into a tree stump and Torres attempted to run from officers. He was detained soon after. A 32-year-old passenger also was arrested in the incident. He has not been charged, Smith said.
