A man police said was responsible for a shooting Wednesday initially determined accidental is now being held on felony assault charges.

Police charged Douglas Maxiumus Heffernan, 23, with aggravated assault with a deadly weapon in connection with the shooting of a 20-year-old man at a home in the 3500 block of Pebble Drive.

Justice of the Peace Bill Cooke arraigned Heffernan on Friday, setting his bail at $500,000.

Heffernan told police he accidentally shot the man in the head while cleaning his Taurus revolver. The man was treated at the scene and airlifted to Scott & White Hospital in Temple. He remained in critical condition Friday.

Police confiscated the revolver and observed that loaded bullets were clearly visible when the chamber was closed.

Cooke also arraigned the following:

Chelsea Nicole Howell, 19, on a charge of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon. Howell’s bail was set at $100,000.

Raphael Leander Willis, 20, on a charge of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon. Willis’ bail was set at $100,000.

I’m a wheel-gun guy I can understand a round going off in a semi-automatic pistol while cleaning it but a revolver that’s almost impossible if you have the cylinder out you can clearly see all the rounds; he was probably playing around with the gun and it fired.
