A man wanted in connection with the August stabbing death of a woman in Killeen was arrested in Turlock, Calif., early Thursday morning.

David Vega, 28, had been on the run since he allegedly stabbed Danielle Acosta-Guerrero, 30, to death in the 2400 block of Haven Drive on Aug. 17 and assaulted her 6-year-old son.

Vega, a Fort Hood soldier, fled the residence just before officers arrived.

Carroll Smith, a spokesperson with the Killeen Police Department, said an alert officer with the Turlock Police Department was patrolling his area at 12:38 a.m., when he noticed a suspicious vehicle in the parking lot of a local motel.

When the officer called in the license plate, it returned as a stolen plate and the information did not match the vehicle.

The officer checked the vehicle identification number, which returned to Vega. During the course of the officer’s investigation, he confirmed that Vega was inside one of the hotel rooms.

The Turlock Tactical Response Team was deployed and motel guests were evacuated as officers prepared to execute the arrest warrant on Vega, who was considered armed and dangerous.

Vega surrendered without incident at 6 a.m. and was taken into custody. He was transported to the Stanislaus County Jail in Modesto, Calif., according to a statement from KPD.

The Bell County district attorney will decide if Vega should be extradited back to Killeen, Smith said.

On the morning of Acosta-Guerrero’s death, a jogger in the Brookhaven neighborhood in northern Killeen alerted police to the homicide after he heard a woman screaming.

The jogger was able to determine the woman was inside a home in the 2400 block of Haven Drive. He then notified a neighbor, and the two attempted to make contact with the woman, police reported. They banged on the door and no one answered. But the witnesses saw a light turn on and saw a white man inside the home.

They again knocked and heard dogs barking as the man fled through the backyard, a KPD news release stated.

Police arrived moments later and found Acosta-Guerrero had been stabbed multiple times. Emergency personnel took her to Carl R. Darnall Army Medical Center, where she died.

Acosta-Guerrero’s 6-year-old child, who was inside the residence during the incident, received non-life threatening injuries. Police determined Vega was known to Acosta-Guerrero; however, police would not state the nature of their relationship.
