A former Killeen police officer was sentenced to probation for perjury in Bell County court this week.

Tramel Bracey was convicted by a jury of perjury, a class A misdemeanor, on Wednesday.

He was sentenced Thursday to one year of probation, Assistant County Attorney Mark Currier said.

Bracey also will have to pay a $500 fine, complete 50 hours of community service and surrender his Texas Commission on Law Enforcement Officer Standards and Education license. Bracey also waived his right to an appeal, Currier said.

Police suspended Bracey in 2010 in connection with an investigation into a bank account he opened in April that same year at a First National Bank Texas branch in Harker Heights.

The account contained erroneous information, including the Social Security number of Bracey’s son and an address that does not exist.

According to past reports, Bracey maintained the errors in the account were accidental, despite some testimony from bank employees who stated he verified the information.

A Texas Ranger, who was a former Killeen Police officer, initially filed felony bank fraud charges against Bracey in U.S. district court in December 2010 in connection with KPD’s investigation.

Those charges were later dismissed, and the same Texas Ranger filed misdemeanor charges of theft of property, securing documents by deception and perjury in connection to the same bank account, with the county attorney’s office in Belton.

Currier said the theft of property and securing documents by deception charges were dismissed when Bracey agreed to accept the sentence for the perjury charge.

What a joke! This guy was a police officer who committed perjury. How can the County Attorney not recommend any jail time?! Since Jim Nichols has been County Attorney that office has really come down in professionalism. First, the CJ Grisham circus now this. I am not impressed with Nichols.
