BELTON — Two men and a woman who were caught last month in Killeen with 20 pounds of marijuana were indicted Wednesday by a Bell County grand jury.
Marcus Vaughn Furr, 28, of Killeen, Lester Jerome Sumpter, 27, and April Natalie Armenta, 26, both of El Paso, were each indicted on a second-degree felony charge of possession of marijuana in an amount of less than 50 pounds.
According to an arrest affidavit, the three were driving in a truck towing a Dodge Challenger attached to a trailer July 30. A Killeen police officer stopped the vehicle after it failed to signal a lane change on U.S. Highway 190.
The officer smelled marijuana in the truck, and a search revealed a small plastic bag of suspected marijuana. Officers used a K-9 search dog that indicated drugs were in the Challenger the truck was towing.
Inside the trunk, police found multiple bricks of packaged marijuana, which weighed 20 pounds. The arrest affidavit also states police recovered $14,000 in cash.
It was one of the bigger busts of the year for Killeen police.
“It was a large amount from what we’ve seen lately,” spokeswoman Carroll Smith said Thursday.
The price of a pound of marijuana in Texas can range from $200 to $1,200 or even more, depending on the quality and distance from the border with Mexico, according to narcoticnews.com.
If convicted, the three could each face between two and 20 years in prison and a fine of up to $10,000.
Police released a photo of more than 20 pounds of marijuana seized during a traffic stop in Killeen July 30.
Killeen police said the marijuana, along with $14,000 in cash, was found in a Dodge Challenger which was being towed by a truck with New Mexico license plates.
Police arrested 28-year-old Marcus Vaughn Furr of Killeen, 27-year-old Lester Jerome Sumpter and 26-year-old April Natalie Armenta, both of El Paso, in connection with the bust.
All three were indicted on felony charges Wednesday.
