BELTON — A Bell County grand jury indicted two men Wednesday on charges of arson for allegedly setting a fire to a Killeen hotel room while working with dangerous chemicals.

Julius Emaniel King and Benjamin Haskell Copeland were indicted on charges of arson, a second-degree felony, for allegedly causing a fire at High Five Inn. If convicted, the two men could face up to 20 years in prison.

Authorities have not said what King and Copeland were making when the chemicals caught fire in their hotel room May 2. However, some of the chemicals are components used to create crystal methamphetamine, according to recipes posted on forums dedicated to the creation of illegal drugs.

Firefighters responded to a call at the hotel, in the 600 block of W.S. Young Drive, after the manager observed white smoke coming from a room, according to an arrest affidavit. As firefighters approached, they detected the smell of chlorine emanating from the room.

Inside, they found starter fluid, brake fluid, chlorine tablets, acetone and other materials assembled around a coffee carafe in the kitchen sink, where the fire appeared to have originated, the affidavit stated.

Investigators found two identification cards for King in the hotel room and cross checked his name with local retailers. They later interviewed King, who said he and a man he only knew as “Big Zoe” were in the room when a violent chemical reaction occurred, the affidavit stated. At an automotive store, investigators uncovered a receipt for several of the items found in the hotel room and linked them to Copeland.
