A woman may face felony charges after being involved in an accident that injured three children who were riding in her SUV.

The accident occurred about 10:30 a.m. Thursday on the U.S. Highway 190 access road in front of All American Chevrolet in Killeen.

Police and witnesses said the woman was driving east at a high rate of speed, and was weaving in and out of traffic.

The driver lost control of the vehicle, which careened off the road and struck a water main, a light pole and a power pole before coming to rest near a line of new cars on display at the dealership.

The accident sent water spewing into the air and caused nearby businesses to lose power, including Aaron’s Furniture and the Days Inn. Crews from the city of Killeen and Oncor stopped the water flow and restored power shortly after the accident.

Killeen Police Department spokeswoman Carroll Smith said three child passengers in the vehicle, all younger than 9 years old, were taken to Metroplex Hospital with nonlife-threatening injuries.

The driver suffered minor injures and was being evaluated for driving under the influence.

“It’s believed that she was impaired in some way,” Smith said.

If the driver was impaired, she could be charged with up to three counts of driving while intoxicated with a child passenger, a felony. Police did not release the name of the driver and did not reveal if charges were filed against her Thursday.

For Trina McRae, Thursday’s crash highlighted the problem of speeding on Central Texas Expressway, which has a speed limit of 45 mph.

McRae, the sales and marketing manager for Days Inn and its neighboring property, Hawthorne Suites, said in addition to speeding, many drivers cut through the two properties as a shortcut, usually without slowing down. “They turn our property into a drag strip.”
