The number of violent crimes in Killeen decreased in 2013 from the previous year, according to the Killeen Police Department.

Data submitted by the Killeen Police Department on Monday showed an 11 percent decrease in violent crime in 2013.

The data was submitted to state and federal officials for the annual Uniform Crime Report, which keeps statistics on crimes such as murder, rape, robbery and aggravated assault.

Killeen reported 753 “violent crimes” in 2013, compared to 850 in 2012. There was a 50 percent drop in the number of murders, a 4.8 percent drop in rapes and a 27.9 percent drop in robberies, according to the department’s data.

“During 2013, Killeen experienced a significant decline in murders and robberies compared to 2012,” Killeen Police Chief Dennis Baldwin said. “Moreover, there were reductions in

six of the seven UCR categories, which clearly show Killeen is on the right path in becoming a safer city.”

The data released Monday also showed an overall decrease in the number of “nonviolent” crimes. Under the UCR, nonviolent crime includes burglary, larceny and vehicle thefts.

The number of nonviolent crimes dropped from 4,986 in 2012 to 4,791 in 2013, a decrease of just under 4 percent.

While the data showed the number of burglary and larceny crimes decreased in 2013, vehicle thefts rose about 7 percent, from 192 in 2012 to 206 in 2013.

According to the KPD’s online crime reporting system, there have been 21 reports of vehicle theft since Jan. 1 this year.

The UCR data did not reflect Killeen’s per-capita crime rate, which is based on the city’s population.

According to a statement released Monday, the 2013 per-capita crime rate was not included because the U.S. Census Bureau has not released the 2013 population estimates for Killeen. Once the population count is provided, the department will release the UCR crime rate.
