BELTON - A Bell County grand jury Wednesday indicted a woman accused of repeatedly burning her 10-month-old son with a flat iron.

Danine Darquetta Dean, 20, of Belton, is charged with felony injury to a child. She is being held in Bell County Jail on $150,000 bond.

A Belton police officer first interviewed Dean at King's Daughters Hospital in Temple on July 4 after she had taken her child in for medical attention for burns.

The child had been admitted with first- and second-degree burns to his arms.

When interviewed, Dean told police the child was burned after his arm became stuck in a flat iron, which she used to straighten her hair, an arrest report states.

Dean told the officer she waited a day before bringing the child to the hospital because she did not have access to transportation or a telephone from her apartment in Belton.

An officer later visited Dean at the apartment, where he saw a cell phone and a land line, the report states.

Dean told the officer that on the day of the incident, she yelled several times at the child while she was straightening her hair. Dean told two officers she repeatedly had to stop straightening her hair to stop the child from getting off the couch.

She said she yelled and cussed at the child, the report states.

A forensic child abuse doctor told police the child's injuries were not consistent with an accidental burn. The size, shape and severity of burns were likely caused by purposeful trauma, the report states.

When an officer met with Dean's mother, she told police the child had another burn on his arm three weeks prior to the July 3 incident.

The child had a visible scar from the burn, the report states.
