Killeen police are investigating the death of a 25-year-old woman who was found Saturday inside a smoke-filled motel room.

Killeen Police and Fire Department personnel responded to a 911 call in reference to a possible structure fire at 11:30 a.m. Saturday at the Palace Inn in the 6200 block of East Veterans Memorial Boulevard, according to a KPD news release.

Officers were told by maintenance personnel checking rooms of customers who were supposed to be checked out by 11 a.m. that they smelled smoke near one room.

Law enforcement and paramedics found an unresponsive woman inside. Justice of the Peace Bill Cooke pronounced her dead at 11:58 a.m. and ordered an autopsy to determine cause of death.

“We do not know (whether the cause was accidental or intentional), as it’s an ongoing investigation,” KPD spokeswoman Carroll Smith said Saturday afternoon. The woman’s name was withheld, pending notification of her family, Smith added.

Detectives are asking anyone with information about the woman’s death to contact Crime Stoppers at 254-526-8477, go to www.bellcountycrimestoppers.com or text BELLCO along with the tip to 274637.
