Drivers traveling on state highways 195 and 201 can expect detours as the city begins its overpass project at that intersection.

Starting today, drivers on Stagecoach Road from Flanigan Drive to Tyrel Drive will be redirected to an adjacent, temporary road. Drivers traveling on State Highway 201 will be diverted to Reese Creek Road, which runs parallel to the highway.

The $18.2 million project was funded through the Texas Department of Transportation's Pass-Through program, which allows communities to pay the costs of construction and be reimbursed by TxDOT.

"This is part of the southern corridor of the city, so it's important because it provides safer access to the airport, the university and Stagecoach Road, which has been a dangerous intersection," said Hilary Shine, Killeen spokesperson.

Preliminary work on the overpass began in October to raise State Highway 195 over State Highway 201. The project also includes widening State Highway 201 to four lanes from State Highway 195 to the Killeen-Fort Hood Regional Airport. The work is expected to last until spring 2013.

"You have an at-grade crossing (where the overpass will go)," said George Lueck, Killeen's transportation director. "By taking State Highway 195 over State Highway 201, you no longer have a point of conflict. It's a major improvement in safety."

Lueck said three fatalities have occurred at that intersection in the last three years. Two years ago, the intersection didn't have a traffic light.

"(The overpass also is) congestion mitigation, so now cars won't have to stack up at the light. They can move," he said.

Through spring 2013, motorists can use the following detours:

Traffic on State Highway 201 will be detoured onto Reese Creek Road, a small two-lane road that runs parallel to the highway.
