The Area Agency on Aging of Central Texas will present a free six-week workshop for people with diabetes beginning at 1 p.m. Wednesday at the Lions Club Park Senior Center in Killeen.

Each week, participants will meet for a discussion-based diabetes self-management workshop.

Topics to be covered include healthy eating tips and recipes, ways to prevent low blood sugar, dealing with stress and how to set weekly goals, said Debbie Edwards, the senior centers’ manager for the city of Killeen.

Their goal is to ensure people are informed about what they need to be aware of when dealing with the disease.

“It’s good for people new to diabetes and a good refresher course for people who need a little perk to keep them motivated,” Edwards said.

Attendees are invited to report back each week and share their own successful tips for handling diabetes.

“It’s a great opportunity for people to get their health on track,” Edwards said.

Fifteen people had signed up for the workshop by Monday. Additional sponsors include the Central Texas Aging and Disability Resource Center, Texas Healthy Lifestyles, an initiative of the Texas Department of Aging and Disability Services, and Scott & White Healthcare.
