An 8-year-old girl who was attacked by a large dog Saturday was released from the hospital, Killeen Police Department spokeswoman Ofelia Miramontez said Monday.
Another child, a 2-year-old boy, also was attacked by the dog and was pronounced dead a short time later at Fort Hood’s Carl R. Darnall Army Medical Center.
A makeshift memorial with teddy bears sat near the intersection of Pennington and Mildred avenues Monday, marking where the attack occurred.
Killeen police said the attack happened around 5 p.m. Saturday when an 18-year-old man, a 2-year-old boy and an 8-year-old girl were walking home from the nearby Iduma playground when the dog, described as a large bullmastiff, ran out of the garage of a home and attacked.
The dog first attacked the 8-year-old and had to be pulled off her, according to police. The dog then grabbed the 2-year-old and dragged him until someone fired a weapon during the attack and the dog retreated to the garage.
Miramontez said the dog remained in Killeen Animal Control custody. No other details were available Monday. The investigation is ongoing.
