A Killeen police officer shot and killed a dog after it attacked and bit a child Wednesday night.

Killeen police responded to a report of a vicious dog running in a neighborhood and chasing children in the 5600 block of Elk Ridge Court.

The dog, described as a "Malinois shepard mix," chasing kids in the neighborhood. The dog bit and tried to drag one of the children, said Carroll Smith, Killeen Police Department spokesperson.

The officer was able to get the dog off the child. The dog began to come towards the children again, and the officer shot the dog, Smith said.

One child was transported to the hospital with a bite wound to the back of the arm.
