HARKER HEIGHTS — A fiery car crash Sunday night resulted in the death of the driver and sole occupant of the vehicle, a 21-year-old male soldier, police reported.
The car struck a pillar under the Farm-to-Market 2410 bridge as it traveled westbound on U.S. Highway 190, police said. When officers arrived on the scene at 11:55 p.m., the car was on fire.
“The vehicle was fully engulfed in flames,” said Sgt. Roosevelt Wilson of the Harker Heights Police Department.
Firefighters from the Harker Heights Fire Department arrived and extinguished the fire, said chief Jack Collier.
“The call came in at 11:56 and we arrived at 12:01,” he said. “After we got on scene, it only took about five minutes to get (the fire) under control.”
Justice of the Police Garland Potvin pronounced the driver dead at the scene at 12:30 a.m. Monday. An autopsy was ordered.
The driver’s identity is being held pending notification of the family, Wilson said.
The crash, which shut down the highway for a short time, is under investigation by the Harker Heights Police Department.
