TEMPLE — Mayor Pro Tem Danny Dunn confirmed Friday he will run for mayor, following Thursday’s announcement from current Mayor Bill Jones III that he will step down.

“After careful consideration, I have decided to run for the office of mayor,” Dunn said. “The next few years are going to be some of the most important in our city’s history. We have the opportunity to grow, and I want to keep us going in that direction.”

Dunn has served on the Temple City Council for 2½ years, and was up for re-election this year. He plans to file for the office Feb. 7, which is the first day candidates can file.

After serving as Temple’s mayor for 11 years, Jones will end his term early, following the May 11 election or when a successor is elected, if a runoff is necessary. His current term runs through May 2014, but he decided to step down in order to spend more time on his business interests.
