COPPERAS COVE — Members of the Copperas Cove Independent School District’s Board of Trustees took action Tuesday to address some the district’s networking and technology needs.
Members voted 7-0 to approve upgrades to network cabling infrastructure at Martin Walker Elementary School and Copperas Cove Junior High School for a combined cost of $85,000 as part of their consent agenda at the meeting.
According to reports attached to the agenda items, upgrades were necessary because the network infrastructure at several of the district’s schools is outdated, and is not capable of supporting the latest technologies for students.
“One of the things we are seeing in the district’s network is that we are having speed and bandwidth issues,” said Joseph Burns, the district’s superintendent.
The vote for the upgrades at the two schools wasn’t the only technology-related item on the board’s agenda. Members also received an informational report from Burns about a district-wide network audit, which is set to begin the week of Nov. 5.
The audit, which will be conducted with Houston-based Round Rock Solutions, will cover the district’s 11 campuses, central administration complex, athletic annex, warehouse and support services center.
“(The audit) will give us a good grasp of where we are,” said Joan Manning, the board’s president.
The audit will cost about $6,000, and will look at existing cabling, servers, network switches, wireless access points and other network components.
“We want to be prepared to have a robust network to support the technology needs of our students and staff,” Burns said.
Burns said the district hopes to complete the audit and have a comprehensive report on the results by its Nov. 15 workshop meeting.
In addition to the votes on the network cabling upgrades, the board approved a number of other items Tuesday, including the purchase of two school buses for just over $188,000, a notice of election and a canvassing meeting for the November elections and an audit of CCISD’s Public Education Information Management System at a cost of $16,500.
