Two academic departments at Central Texas College have partnered to offer a new advising service to students at the college’s Killeen campus.

The college’s Guidance and Counseling Department and the Academic Studio Student Success Center now offer “drop-in advising” to CTC students two days a week.

The program will allow students with questions about academic degree plans, placement exams, test scores, course scheduling, registration, support programs, academic policies and graduation requirements to speak with the school’s academic counselors without an appointment.

“Sometimes students have quick questions, and they don’t want to go through the process of seeing an adviser,” said Stephanie Legree-Roberts, the college’s director of student success and persistence. “They can walk in, but there may be a wait, even if they have a quick question.”

Legree-Roberts said the college has between 10 and 12 counselors serving 6,000 students. The “drop-in advising” allows them to walk in and get 15-minute advising consultations with academic counselors from the guidance and counseling department. Students interested in longer sessions can schedule a separate advising appointment and meet with counselors in student services.

Since the college began offering the drop-in advising sessions on Tuesdays, “many of the students who have come in have questions that relate to graduation and career readiness,” said Elaine Riley, director of CTC’s career center. “They want to make sure they are taking the right classes, or to make sure their credits will transfer to other schools.”

Since the college began offering the drop-in counseling on Tuesdays and Thursdays at its Academic Studio Student Success Center, it has seen an average of three to four students a day take advantage of the program. That number may grow, as the college just began a new registration period Tuesday.
