Local students recently had an opportunity to thank the donors who made their college scholarships possible.
Recipients of the Boys & Girls Club Gordon Graves Green Vest Scholarship met with Gordon and Linda Graves for lunch at Red Lobster in Killeen on Nov. 28.
The students were able to express their gratitude and thanks to the Graves for helping make their dreams of attending college a reality.
The six scholarship recipients graduated from area high schools.
Brittany Romero and Allysen Hudson both graduated from Gatesville High School — Romero in 2014 and Hudson in 2016.
Mary Woods graduated from Shoemaker High School in 2014. John Fizer is a 2015 Harker Heights High School graduate. Keeana Shaw graduated from Ellison High School in 2016.
Alex Wilson is a 2016 Copperas Cove High School graduate.
The Gordon Graves Green Vest Scholarship was established in 2008 and is awarded to local Boys & Girls Club members.
The scholarship covers full tuition, fees and books to Central Texas College for two years and two years at Texas A&M University-Central Texas to complete their bachelor’s degrees.
Graves spoke to the students about the importance of a college education and how specific training and knowledge will help the students be the most marketable in today’s competitive workforce, according to Lisa Rogers, scholarship coordinator for the Boys & Girls Club of Central Texas.
Graves also presented a check for $20,000 to the Boys & Girls Club of Central Texas at the lunch, to augment the existing Gordon Graves Green Vest Scholarship fund set up through the Central Texas College Foundation.
