Central Texas College students taking classes in the spring will need to show proof that they have been vaccinated for bacterial meningitis before they are allowed to register.
The college said Thursday they will be strictly enforcing the new state regulations, passed last year, which require students to have an initial bacterial meningitis vaccination or booster during the five-year period preceding, and at least 10 days prior to, the first day of the semester.
According to a statement from the college, students must submit documented proof of vaccination or documentation that exempts them from the requirement.
Those who fail to do so will not be permitted to register for future semesters until the requirement is fulfilled.
Exemptions from the requirements include:
Students 30 years or older by the first day of the spring 2013 semester (Jan. 14).
Students enrolled only in online or other distance education courses.
Students enrolled in a non-credit continuing education course less than 360 contact hours or a continuing education corporate training program.
Students enrolled in a dual-credit course taught at a public or private K-12 facility not located on a higher education institution campus.
Students also are exempt if they present signed documentation from a physician or are incarcerated in a Texas prison.
Students will be required to submit their documentation to Magnus Health Student Medical Record, a Web-based system for tracking and storing the bacterial meningitis immunizations and exemptions, and will be charged a $10 administrative fee paid directly to Magnus, according to the college’s statement.
Online registration for the spring 2013 semester starts Nov. 26, and walk-in registration will be Jan. 7-11.
