COPPERAS COVE — The noise inside Lea Ledger Auditorium on Wednesday afternoon was deafening. The crowd cheered, rang cowbells, blew whistles and crashed cymbals. Even a megaphone could be heard in the din.

It wasn’t a crowd of rowdy students or excited Bulldawg football fans. It was Copperas Cove Independent School District educators.

Teachers were gathered to participate in the district’s annual convocation, a high-energy event to kick off the new school year.

“We are very excited to be back this year,” Superintendent Joseph Burns said.

Now entering his second year as Cove’s top administrator, Burns thanked teachers for their work.

“Last year, you did an exceptional job of meeting the needs of our students,” Burns said. “I applaud you for everything you do for CCISD, the students you teach and their families.”

The theme of this year’s convocation was “Making an Impact.”

School board president Joan Manning gave a speech highlighting this year’s theme, “Making an Impact,” talking about how teachers can change students’ lives.

“We want everyone of you to be that special person in a student’s life,” Manning said.

While the message to teachers was heartfelt, the atmosphere was festive and featured performances by cheerleaders, the Copperettes and the Pride of Cove marching band. The district’s principals were cajoled into a surprise dance number with coaches onstage.

Even Aaron Davis, a motivational speaker who addressed the gathering, said he was surprised by the energy and enthusiasm of the crowd.

“I’ve been at events like this all over the country, and I haven’t seen anything like this,” Davis said.

School starts Monday in Cove ISD.
