Central Texas College is poised to become the “official college” of next year’s Army Marathon.

The college’s board of trustees voted Thursday to approve a “Corps” level sponsorship for the marathon, which is March 2 in Killeen.

The college sponsored the marathon earlier this year, but not at the level approved by the board at its regular monthly meeting Thursday afternoon. Now, the college will not only donate $25,000 for sponsorship, but also will provide “in-kind” services, such as printing materials and promotion, at a cost of about $10,000.

“I think we need to seize this opportunity,” Chancellor Thomas Klincar said.

This year the marathon brought in more than 1,000 participants. That number is expected to increase to 3,000 next year.

“We are extremely proud to be the official college of the Army Marathon in our second year of participation,” Klincar said. “We support soldiers worldwide and will leverage our locations to build awareness of this incredible event and our support of it.”

In other business Thursday, trustees voted to award a $644,000 contract to Built Wright Construction for renovation of the college’s culinary arts kitchen and dining room areas in the Student Center.

The project includes extensive renovation, including the installation of new equipment and upgrades to electrical, plumbing and other utility systems.

The project will complete the renovation of the upgraded culinary arts area, which includes a separate kitchen lab area in addition to a full-scale kitchen and dining area for use by the department.
