Families have until noon Friday to sign up for free school supplies from the Salvation Army in Killeen.

Salvation Army Capt. Kelly Bryant said 99 children were signed up for the annual school supply giveaway as of Wednesday morning, but there is room for up to 300.

Each year, the Salvation Army works with volunteer groups to gather folders, calculators, crayons, pencils and other supplies for needy families.

“It’s one of the things we do for our community,” Bryant said, adding the local Salvation Army has been doing the school supply giveaway for years.

The program has helped hundreds of families, especially large families that live paycheck to paycheck, Bryant said.

The Salvation Army sees families where “one parent is working, the other is not: They can (pay) their bills, but they don’t have money for other things, like school supplies,” Bryant said.

Families can fill out applications at the Salvation Army Thrift Store, 1306 E. Rancier Ave., from 9 a.m. to noon today and Friday. Bryant said families must bring proof of income and expenses or food stamp certification and copies of each child’s report card and birth certificate.

The Salvation Army plans to pass out the school supplies Aug. 22.
