Local law enforcement responded to a bomb threat at Gateway Middle School in Killeen early Thursday morning.
A spokesperson for the Killeen Independent School District said the threat was phoned in to Bell County Emergency Dispatch before the start of the school day. While no children were in school at the time, students on buses were temporarily diverted to alternate sites along with Gateway staff.
Killeen police and the Killeen Independent School District’s police force searched and cleared the school before students were sent back to their home campus, where they resumed classes for the day.
Gateway Middle School is currently located at 3004 Atkinson Ave., formerly the site of the district’s Pathway’s Academic campus.
Gateway Middle School students were moved to the site after their former campus, located on Zephyr Road, was destroyed by a fire in September.
The fire, which police ruled arson, caused more than $880,000 in damage to the middle school campus.
The Gateway High School campus was not damaged in the fire.
The 100 Gateway Middle School students will likely remain at the Atkinson campus for the rest of the current school year. The district has not yet decided whether or not the old campus will be rebuilt.
