After a series of public hearings, the Killeen Independent School District appears ready to move forward with changes to some attendance zones to relieve overcrowding.
District Superintendent Robert Muller and KISD demographer Jeff Heckathorn presented the rezoning proposal to the KISD Board of Trustees at its regular meeting Thursday night.
The proposal would rezone an area from Saegert Elementary School to Timber Ridge Elementary School for the 2013-2014 school year, affecting about 150 students, Heckathorn said.
In order to minimize the impact of the rezoning on Timber Ridge, the proposal moves an estimated 30 students from Timber Ridge to Mountain View Elementary. It also would move 15 middle school students from Liberty Hill Middle School to Union Grove Middle School in order to keep a consistent feeder system in place for Timber Ridge and Mountain View.
The zoning change is an effort to cope with an influx of students at Saegert. Over the past four years, the school has gained an additional 400 students, and its enrollment has exceeded 1,300 students, well beyond the building’s planned capacity of 1,050.
“(The rezoning) begins to address the overcrowding that currently exists at Saegert,” Muller said.
To cope with anticipated future growth, the district also is planning to construct its 33rd elementary school. While the new school is expected to help accommodate growth in the southern part of the district, it will not be able to provide that relief for another two years.
Officials initially floated the idea of changing the attendance zones in November.
At a meeting in late January, the board allowed the district to begin a series of public hearings at the schools. Those hearings were held at Saegert on Feb. 19 and at Timber Ridge Elementary on Feb. 21.
No vote was taken on the rezoning proposal Thursday. Muller indicated that it would likely be brought back to the board members for action at an upcoming meeting.
