Members of the Killeen Independent School District Board of Trustees approved the district’s 2013-14 school year calendar at their regular meeting Tuesday night.
While next year’s calender will feature some minor changes in early-out days for students and professional development days for teachers, the trustees also unanimously approved changing the term used for the district’s winter break to “Christmas Break.”
“The break does occur at the same time as Christmas,” said Trustee Minerva Trujillo, who moved to approve the calendar with the addition that the name of the vacation, which usually takes place in late December, be changed to “Christmas Break.”
The draft version of the calendar, which was presented to the board at that same meeting, still included the term “Winter Break.”
When the question as to why the district chose to use the term “Winter Break” instead of “Christmas Break,” district director of employee relations Tina Cole said the term had been used for several years.
“It was used for consistency,” Cole said. “We have a summer break, spring break and winter break.”
Terry Delano, the board’s vice president, said the name of the break had at one point been “Christmas Break,” but was later changed.
Delano asked similar questions of Cole at a Dec. 11 board meeting when the draft version of the calendar was first presented to the board for discussion and review.
At that meeting Delano indicated that he favored changing the name of the break back to “Christmas Break.”
Next year, the “Christmas Break” will run from Dec. 23 through Jan. 3. The district’s break in March will remain listed as “Spring Break.”
In addition to voting on the 2013-14 calendar, the trustees also approved their Annual Financial and Compliance Reports for the 2012 fiscal year, and approved changes to district policy to suspend a state requirement that would count high school students’ cores on the state’s new assessment test as 15 percent of their final grade.
