The Killeen Independent School District is providing academic materials for students in grades prekindergarten through eighth this summer as a way to encourage them to do well this upcoming school year.

The “Take-Home” backpack program is providing over 100 backpacks for two-week rental to students in need of additional academic support throughout the district. There is no cost to parents or students.

From July 10 to Aug. 10, Monday through Thursday, parents can bring their student to pick up a backpack filled with school supplies, books, writing and math activities.

Backpacks are checked out for a two-week period by parents to be used by their children; the backpacks are then returned to KISD. The backpacks are filled with grade-specific academic activities. KISD also provides Spanish-language versions available for grades prekindergarten to fifth.

The district has about 100 backpacks available to check out for student use.

For more information, call 254-336-0211 or go to the Jackson Professional Learning Center at 902 Rev. R.A. Ambercrombie Drive, where the backpacks are kept.
