They also will enhance their English and language arts by writing expository essays.

A live daily news network will provide out-of-the-box learning opportunities for the students. This mock television studio will challenge students to gain independence in planning, writing, editing, producing, supervising and performing the television productions. Students also will gain public speaking skills and confidence. Students will write the morning announcements, edit and prioritize the information and increase their teamwork and communication.
iPad minis for learning center, Manor Middle School $4,973.45

This program is targeted to special education and at-risk students who struggle with mastering grade-level concepts. The iPad minis will help engage the students with technology-based learning. Students with disabilities become easily discouraged when they cannot grasp a concept quickly. The iPads will present the core subject material in a way that will capture their attention with visual stimulation and help the students with a variety of learning levels and disabilities.

Inclusion students are those with special-education needs. Some of them are autistic; many of them are considered resource or low-performing students, all of which require IEP’s individualized education plans. The iPads will provide innovative, mobile technology to allow students to foster creativity and help close learning gaps to help them learn at their maximum potential. Students will become more involved and active and increase their academic success.
Kid Leaders in Unlikely Places, Hay Branch Elementary, $1,407

This program will combine at-risk students with high achieving students to increase leadership, behavior and personal motivation. Students respond more positively when asked to take responsibility and leadership roles. This program will purchase two curriculum programs to encourage results: Kid Leaders and Why Try? At the culmination of the program, students will have the opportunity to go to Peaceable Kingdom for ropes course training that will encourage teamwork, positive risk taking and leadership.
Mimio Madness, Hay Branch Elementary $4,722.60

Mimio products are an interactive technology component for teachers and students to use in the classroom. Mimio can take the place of traditional paper and pencil lecture to allow more students to participate at the same time, thus creating more classroom engagement. The program will benefit third- and fifth-grade students who are considered at risk and are currently working with campus Interventionists. Currently, the school has two Interventionists but only one has a “smart”board. By purchasing this package, it will allow both interventionists the same opportunities to enhance learning. One interventionist will focus on reading and the other will focus on math.
Mini’s making a Maximum Impact for Learning, Pershing Park Elementary, $4,185.70

Killeen ISD campuses are introducing “Bring Your Own Device” to allow students to bring and use their own portable devices to enhance learning. More than 70 percent of the students at this campus are on free and reduced lunches and would not be able to afford to participate. The addition of 10 iPad minis to be used in the library will allow students to research, analyze and read at higher levels. The librarian and curriculum specialist plan to target the following student groups: African-American, economically disadvantaged and special education students.
On Target Learning, Reeces Creek Elementary, $2,775

Through the incorporation of an archery program, the campus will implement lessons to strengthen students in those areas that are considered Red Line TEKS to improve their academic awareness. Although this Bulls-eye Math program is not new to the district, it is new to the campus. By using the program, students will increase their listening skills, speaking skills, hand-eye coordination, math, reading, science and safety skills.
Rachel’s Challenge, Start a Chain Reaction Career Center and Patterson MS, $5,000

In support of the Killeen ISD initiative to reduce bullying, this project will implement Rachel’s Challenge, a program to eliminate prejudice, guard influences and prevent bullying by learning about the 1999 Columbine High School tragedy. Students will receive training to equip them to lead in character initiatives, to organize community service and to sustain a positive culture change within the school district.
Reading is Fun! Hay Branch Elementary, $4,899

Reading development is an important part of the first-grade curriculum. Along with the TEKS Resource System, the teachers at this campus use “The Daily 5” program to help direct reading instruction. The materials requested with this grant — The Reading Mentor and Reading Rods Word Kit, Nook readers and Whisper Phone Select — will allow students to complete a series of literacy tasks more effectively, which will allow the small group time to be more meaningful and contribute to higher reading achievement.
Reflex Math, Flexing Math Knowledge, Ira Cross Elementary, $4,679

This proposal is for students in grades 1-5 to improve math fluency. The program is a widely used, research-based technology program through “Explore Learning” that enhances mathematical facts. By using Reflex Math 20 minutes per day, the first- through fifth-graders will increase their fact fluency in addition, subtraction, multiplication and division. This will allow students to achieve higher scores and increase STAAR results. The online program will allow parents to access student achievement and monitor their children’s progress.
Science Olympiad – 29 elementary campuses, $10,585

This program is a continuation of a district science initiative that will involve 29 elementary campuses. The Science Olympiad is an international nonprofit organization devoted to improving the quality of science education, increasing student interest and providing recognition for outstanding achievement. Preparation for the events will take place on 29 campuses during after-school Science Club meetings. Each participating elementary school may enter one team of 15 students in the tournament. The 2014 fifth-grade science STAAR achievement data will be used to evaluate the gains in learning as compared to the 2013 science data.
Swivl and Flip, Ellison High School, $1,195

The purchase of 5 Swivl robotic platforms will facilitate the production of videos for classroom instruction, professional development and student projects. The Swivl has a wireless tracking device and wireless microphone that enables an iPod, a smart phone or a video camera to record every movement and word of a speaker. Videos can be used to create recordings of information and instruction to allow students to view anytime to increase their learning skills.
Technology in the Hands of Students, Rancier Middle School, $4,022.22

This grant will put technology in the hands of students by using PASCO Scientific Probeware to enhance interest and skills in Science. Students will gain experience designing and conducting their own experiments, participate in lab activities and increase learning in the STEM fields of science, technology, engineering and math. In addition, there are several scientific investigation and reasoning TEKS that will have a direct positive influence on student comprehension that should yield higher test scores for the students.
Texas Dirt: It is the True Grit, Ellison High School, $5,000

This initiative will allow students to collect and define a complex set of 256 Texas county soil samples for a deeper understanding of our ecosystem. Students will use localized field-based observations to match erosion processes in the soils. Through visual and reflective interaction, students will use words, drawings, paintings and photographs to compare and contrast the soil samples.
Trailblazing Career Paths in STEM Liberty Hill Middle School, $2,366

This project provides an on-site field trip experience by bringing a 40 foot, mobile exhibit trailer, which houses a variety of engineering and science exhibits to the school. Each exhibit in the Trailblazer provides experiential learning on a specific science concept which correlates to the TEKS. In the two-day period the trailer is at the school, all students will have an opportunity to access the math and engineering museum on wheels. Take-away information is provided to teachers and students to sustain interest in STEM-related careers after the Trailblazer visit.
Walk the Line with CBR 2, Rancier Middle School, $4,760

One of the expectations for middle school Algebra I students is the ability to interpret graphs. This campus not only wants the students to create and explain graphs, they want them to visually walk a graph by using the Calculator Based Ranger (CBR 2). The CBR2 is a motion detector that will allow students to walk a line and will pick up their motion using distance and time. The data is recorded on a graphic calculator. Using this technology, the students will create graphs, calculate the slope of the graph and be able to verbalize a description of the graph. Eighth-grade students also will use the technology to introduce and explore scatter plots and slope.
